Study: Internationally trained nurses linked to more stable workforce

Hospital units with higher proportions of internationally trained nurses have lower turnover rates according to a study by researchers at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing. The researchers were interested in knowing whether a high percentage of internationally educated nurses might negatively impact collaboration among health professionals on a hospital unit because of linguistic or cultural barriers. The researchers found no evidence to support this notion. Instead they found units with more internationally educated nurses had lower turnover rates and higher levels of education. The study analyzed 2013 National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators survey data from 24,045 nurses working in 160 U.S. acute care hospitals. (Newswise news release, 2/18/20)
