UCSF Health builds on telemedicine to create virtual nursing

Kay Burke, MBA, RN, the chief nursing informatics officer at UCSF Health says her system is using telemedicine processes to advance virtual nursing. The San Francisco-based health system has long used telemedicine for nurse triage and virtual consultation in the intensive care unit. It has applied telemedicine processes to start virtual nursing programs on adult inpatient acute care services units, in its birth center to educate patients scheduled for a C-section and on a pediatric floor to assess the social drivers of health. UCSF Health modified its electronic health record to create a work list for the virtual nurse, such as providing patient education before discharge. (HealthLeaders Media article, 7/3/24)
