Shared governance supports nurse leader development

A survey of 53 former AONL Nurse Manager Fellowship participants revealed that shared governance and councils can provide a growth opportunity for emerging nurse leaders. According to a study by Beverly Hancock, DNP, RN, AONL senior director of leadership development and M.T. Meadows, DNP, RN, former AONL director of professional practice, published in the June Nurse Leader, “The involvement of point-of-care nurses in professional governance offers a significant opportunity for the manager to catalyze leadership interest.” The authors described the nurse manager as instrumental in identifying and developing future nurse leaders. They also list ways to engage in coaching, which they put forward as a key strategy for developing nurse leaders and empowering them to effect change.
