Emeritus status helps hospital retain experienced RNs

To staunch the “brain drain” resulting from the wave of baby boomer nurse retirements, Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Ind., has initiated an emeritus nurse (E-RN) program. E-RN status allows experienced Parkview nurses to remain on the job while working fewer hours in less physically demanding roles. More than 20 retired nurses have also returned to Parkview to take advantage of the program. Because the presence of E-RNs provides support for novice nurses, first-year turnover rates in the health system are down significantly. Savings from reduced turnover more than offset the cost of the E-RN program, according to an article in the Journal of Nursing Administration. (Campaign for Action story, 2/19/20)
