Recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show black and Hispanic people in all age categories die from COVID-19 at much higher rates than white people. An article prepared by the Brookings Institution contains graphs detailing “stark inequalities” in COVID-19’s impact. Likely contributing factors include the concentration of minority populations in regions hard-hit by the coronavirus and the preponderance of these groups in occupations that don’t allow for social distancing. CDC data also indicate that COVID-19 patients with underlying conditions die at 12 times the rate of otherwise healthy people. (Brookings story, 6/16/20)
