Reflections can improve interactions with ethnic minority patients

The authors of a study published in a recent issue of Nursing Inquiry used a critical incident approach to explore health care professionals’ experiences serving ethnic minority patients. Critical incidents discussed in two focus group sessions showed health care professionals may experience challenging professional situations involving patients, prejudice toward patients and labeling by patients with backgrounds differing from their own. The authors discussed these revelations and recommended such discussions be included in health care provider professional development. The authors asserted critical incident reflections could enhance coping strategies for health care professionals and improve their relationships with patients from ethnic minority backgrounds.
