Nurse survey underscores importance of mentorship

Novice and seasoned nurses support each other, and both groups desire more mentorship opportunities, a survey found. More than 80% of early-tenure nurses reported mid-tenure and most-tenured nurses were “great resources to learn from.” Similarly, more than 75% of experienced nurses say they enjoy working with their less-experienced peers, and about half say early-career nurses get enough support from them when needed. The survey found 34% of retired nurses would consider returning to the workforce if they could mentor new nurses. However, one-third of experienced nurses said they lack the time or capacity to train and coach nurses. The survey, part of the American Nurses Foundation Pulse on the Nation’s Nurses Survey Series, was conducted in the fall of 2023; 5,772 nurses completed it.
