Nurse engagement rises, but leader engagement falls

Nurse engagement rose slightly for the first time since the pandemic (up +0.04 to 3.89 on a 5.0 scale), but leader engagement fell for the third year, dropping 3.7%, according to a Press Ganey report. Health leaders have not rebounded from the pandemic, leading to concerns that a lack of engagement among leaders could result in less engagement among staff. Millennials, comprising about one-third of the workforce, have lower engagement scores than non-millennials (3.89 out of 5.0 compared with 4.12 among non-millennials). Nearly one-third of employees are disengaged, underscoring the need for action since disengaged employees are twice as likely to quit as employees who are highly engaged. The annual pulse surveyed more than 345,000 RNs and 131,000 physicians in 2023. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/14/24)
