NIH launches overdose prevention research network

The National Institutes of Health last month established a research network to test harm reduction strategies in community settings to determine efforts to help save lives. The network, which builds on existing harm reduction research, will provide $36 million over five years, the largest amount of funding from NIH to study harm reduction strategies to target overdose deaths. Last month, the White House and Office of National Drug Control Policy launched its Non-Fatal Opioid Overdose Surveillance Dashboard. The first tool of its kind, the dashboard highlights patterns in drug use, particularly in pre-hospital settings. The dashboard seeks to better address resource allocation, treatment and recovery supports. (NIH news release, 12/16/22)
