Kingston discusses how to reduce workplace violence

Hospitals can take a multifaceted approach to reducing workplace violence, according to Mary Beth Kingston, PhD, RN. Kingston, executive vice president and CNO of Advocate Health in Charlotte, N.C., says hospitals can train all employees and institute better reporting processes to help identify where incidents are occurring to target effective solutions. Hospitals should implement risk and assessment processes, mobile duress technology and behavioral response teams. Kingston, an AONL past president, notes nurses should consider the patient’s perspective to de-escalate situations effectively. Nurses who work in high-risk areas also should receive advanced training, including self-defense. Kingston says peer support training can empower nurses to help each other in the workplace.
