CNE explains how UW Health is reducing span of control

UW Health is striving to reduce nurse manager span of control, defined as the number of employees a nurse manager is in charge of supervising, according to AONL member and senior vice president and CNE Rudy Jackson, DNP, RN. With more time, Jackson believes nurse managers could develop stronger relationships with their teams and improve quality outcomes and the patient experience, subsequently reducing costs and turnover. The Madison, Wis.-based system plans to conduct studies with nurse managers to gauge where nurse managers spend their time. UW has leveraged technology and deployed full-time charge nurses to take some of the administrative burden off nurse mangers. AONL and Laudio recently released a report on span of control. (HealthLeaders Media article, 6/3/24)
