Atrium Health’s virtual nurses decrease errors

Atrium Health’s virtual nursing program has decreased falls and medication errors and led to increased patient and nurse satisfaction. Begun in March 2021 to meet staffing needs during the pandemic, the program has become a permanent part of the North Carolina-based health system. Atrium Health has improved retention by using experienced nurses as virtual nurses who can help novice nurses at the bedside, according to Patricia Mook, MSN, RN, vice president of nursing operations, professional development and practice and an AONL Foundation board member. In addition to assisting staff nurses, virtual nurses also aid the physician, pharmacist and other care providers. (HealthLeaders Media article, 2/13/23)
