Article offers advice on improving new nurse well-being

An article in the June issue of Nurse Leader explores the relationship between the psychological capital of new nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic and turnover. Over 4,300 new nurses who participated in residency programs across more than 50 care settings responded to a survey between 2019 and 2022 on their psychological capital. Efficacy scores increased over time and reduced the risk of turnover, but optimism scores decreased and increased the risk of turnover. The leaders should measure new nurses’ psychological capital to determine their emotional well-being, the authors suggest. Leaders also can use the study’s findings to tailor emotional development and coping strategies for new nurses. Health care organizations should promote listening, learning and responding to foster a positive culture and support for well-being.
