Additional support needed to successfully implement EBP

Evidence-based practice education and ongoing support are necessary to promote EBP implementation, a study found. Published in the May issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, AONL member Lisa Wayman, PhD, RN, and colleagues compared implementation rates for participants in an EBP immersion compared with participants in an EBP immersion plus a follow-up EBP course. Participants in the EBP immersion group implemented 18% of their initiatives. Participants in the EBP immersion plus the follow-up course implemented 35% of their initiatives, and another 22% of participants were in the process of implementing their projects. Among recommendations, the authors suggest allowing enough time for implementation and providing mentoring and support. Wayman is a clinical quality program specialist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Phoenix.
