Health system venture funds support nurse innovators

Large health systems as diverse as Kaiser Permanente and the Mayo Clinic are developing venture investment arms to support health care innovation. According to nurse executive authors from the Nicklaus Children’s Health System (NCHS) in Miami, Fla., these entities are “increasingly looking to nurses to identify opportunities and solve problems creatively.” Their article describes Children’s Health Ventures, Inc., an NCHS for-profit corporation, which uses nurses to evaluate technologies and consult on the firm’s investment strategy. By providing financial support, time and other resources, nurse executives can play a distinct role in developing and supporting a culture that encourages nurses to find innovative solutions, the authors conclude.
