Nurse approach to glucose monitoring improves COVID-19 care

To avert the need for hourly blood tests to keep their COVID-19 patients’ diabetes under control and reduce their own exposure to the coronavirus, nurses at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center came up with an alternative. They approached the FDA for permission to use continuous glucose monitoring devices, which were only approved for outpatient use. With permission granted, they employed the devices along with intravenous insulin infusion. Last month, the team behind the innovation received an ANCC Magnet prize. The innovation is now being used in other health systems and may eventually be used with non-COVID patients. (10 WBNS article, 12/1/21)
