HHS seeks input on legitimate access to controlled substances

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is requesting information on ensuring legitimate access to controlled substances, including opioids, while also preventing diversion and abuse. Stakeholder comments will inform a report to policymakers who may use the information to craft laws to combat the opioid crisis. Comments may be emailed and must be provided by 5:00 p.m. ET on Aug. 26. HHS is collecting the information as part of its responsibilities under the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016. Although passed by unanimous consent, the law has drawn criticism spurred by two journalistic investigations. Many lawmakers now favor repeal of the legislation because it limits the ability of the Drug Enforcement Administration to freeze suspicious shipments of narcotics.
