Bernadette Melnyk to Receive AONE Foundation’s 2017 Nurse Researcher Award

The American Organization of Nurse Executives Foundation for Nursing Leadership Research and Education (AONE Foundation) today announced Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, is the recipient of the AONE Foundation 2017 Nurse Researcher Award. The award recognizes a nurse researcher who has made significant contributions to nursing research and is recognized by the broader nursing community as an outstanding nurse researcher. Melnyk will be honored during the AONE Annual Meeting and Exposition this week in Baltimore.

Melnyk holds two positions at The Ohio State University in Columbus. She is dean, vice president for health promotion and chief wellness officer at College of Nursing and a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at College of Medicine. She is recognized globally for her innovative approaches to a wide range of health care challenges and has consulted with hundreds of health care systems and colleges worldwide to improve quality of care and patient outcomes by implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice. Her work has appeared in more than 280 publications and four books including Evidence-based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare: A Guide to Best Practice and Implementing EBP.

Melnyk was elected to the Institute of Medicine and appointed to serve a four-year term on the United States Preventive Services Task Force. She founded the National Interprofessional Education and Practice Collaborative to advance the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Million Hearts® initiative and its goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. She also founded the National Consortium for Building Healthy Academic Communities, a collaborative organization to improve population health in the nation’s institutions of higher learning.

Melnyk is a member of the National Quality Forum’s Behavioral Health Standing Committee and the National Institutes of Health’s National Advisory Council for Nursing Research. She is editor of the journal, Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing, and is a member of the U.S. Healthiest, the National Guideline Clearinghouse and the National Quality Measures Clearinghouse boards of directors. She is a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Nursing, the National Academies of Practice and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
